I’ve spent most of my life involved with improving my health as a practitioner of nutrition, yoga, exercise and spirituality.
In my mid-20’s working a desk job and going to college in the evenings, I was always sitting in a chair at the office, in my car, in the classroom, and at home studying. Other than getting up and sitting down, no physical exercise. At the time I thought I was eating healthy, mostly salads, that had cheese and lots of rich creamy dressings. Within about 3 years I gained over 30 pounds that I wasn’t aware I was gaining. I was caught in the hamster wheel of life and it wasn’t a positive experience. It wasn’t until I was invited to a special event and had to shop for a dress that I got a look at myself in the mirror. That’s when I realized how much weight I had gained. No longer was I a size 6, now I needed a size 11. Depression set in, I hated myself as I looked at what I had allowed to happen to me. My self-esteem plummeted, and that was my AHA moment. It took a shocking experience to motivate me into taking action to lose weight and regain my health.
I changed my lifestyle. I still worked and went to school, however I made myself get up an hour earlier to go for a walk/jog before work. I’m a morning person so that was my time. Moving my body a little had a huge impact on how I felt the rest of the day.The rich salad dressing got substituted for vinegar and oil, the amount of cheese got cut in half. It wasn’t easy, I had many setbacks and would beat myself up, however I was determined to get my body back. The weight did drop off over a few years, I didn’t have a coach, nor did I have nutritional knowledge at that time. It was not easy, it was messy, scary and lonely.
After years of tremendous research and nutrition classes I better understood how to balance my body. By now I had become a vegetarian and learned what I needed to sustain my vegetarian lifestyle. Balancing my body and my mind, my spiritual connectivity improved and I began seeking more answers to the mysterious lives we are all leading. If either the body, mind, or spirit are out of alignment, we are not able to function at our full capacity. I studied nutrition, took cooking classes, practiced yoga, Pilates, became a Reiki Master, Shaman and studied with Jack Kornfield, Thich Nhat Hahn, and a Kahuna Master and other great spiritual beings to learn how to meditate and calm the mind. All of these practices enriched my life.
I was introduced to a scientific method where I could juice fast for 30 days, or more. I never felt better and was amazed how my body responded. This is not a path for many people as we are all so different and need to listen to our bodies. However, for me it is a great way to reboot my body. I continue to fast about twice a year. My energy improves and I realize how hard my body has to work to digest food.
Now when either my body, mind, or spirit are out of alignment I can tell which of the three needs attention and take the time necessary to get all three back on track. This is why I consider myself a Spiritual Health Coach. I know the importance of working on all three levels to gain optimal health and wellbeing.
